Screen Tests Underway for Next James Bond Actor
Potential candidates for the iconic spy role are undergoing final evaluations as Amazon eyes a new era for 007.
The search for the next James Bond is entering its final stages, with screen tests for the coveted role reportedly underway. Actors including Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Josh O’Connor, and Jack Barton are rumored to be in contention to succeed Daniel Craig as the iconic British spy.
While no official casting has been confirmed, industry reports indicate that final screen tests, which include stunts, dialogue, and assessments of camera presence, are being conducted. Amazon, which now owns the rights to the James Bond franchise, is expected to be looking for an actor who can lead the property into a new era.
The franchise is also on track to experience its longest-ever gap between films. The current record stands at six and a half years between Timothy Dalton’s last outing in 1989 and Pierce Brosnan’s debut in 1995. The gap between Daniel Craig’s final film, No Time to Die (2021), and the anticipated next installment, potentially helmed by director Denis Villeneuve and expected around 2028, could surpass this record.
Potential Candidates Emerge
Callum Turner, 36, has been noted for his roles in One Night Only and other high-profile releases. While possessing a likable charm and suitable looks, some question if his existing visibility might be a drawback. His age also means he would be approaching 40 by the time a new film is released, similar to Daniel Craig's situation.
Jack Lowden, also 36, has garnered attention for his work in Dunkirk and the television series Slow Horses. As a predominantly television and stage actor, he is seen as having a potentially cleaner slate with audiences compared to more established film actors. However, his appearance in various fictional roles, including as the heir to a pizza chain, has been humorously noted.
Josh O’Connor, 36, is recognized for his performances in Challengers and Wake Up Dead Man. Praised for his charisma and acting choices, concerns have been raised about whether his recent roles, often portraying gentler characters, align with the colder, deadlier persona of Bond. Like Turner, he has also been a lead in several high-profile films.
Jack Barton, the youngest at 31, has appeared in Heartstopper and Poor Things. As the least known of the rumored candidates, he represents a potential choice for a less-established actor to grow with the role. His age is also seen as an advantage, aligning with the possibility of a longer tenure as Bond.
The production delays are partly attributed to director Denis Villeneuve’s commitment to a third Dune film. However, significant time has also been spent on casting and conceptualizing the direction for the next Bond film, highlighting the challenge of finding the right fit for the iconic character.
