Scottish pupils are reportedly being denied last-minute university places through the Clearing process, with institutions prioritizing applicants from other parts of the UK and international students who pay tuition fees. This situation has led to renewed demands for an overhaul of Scotland's university funding system.
Heriot-Watt University and Glasgow School of Art have stated they have no places available for Scottish students during this year's Clearing. Strathclyde University has only one course open, Glasgow Caledonian University has limited nursing courses, Stirling University has two courses available, and the University of Glasgow has five courses, some of which are at its Dumfries campus.
Concerns Over Funding Model
Scottish Conservative education spokesman Meghan Gallacher criticized the current university funding model, stating that many Scottish students are set to miss out on educational opportunities. "Ministers cannot keep burying their heads in the sand about this escalating crisis and recognise it is deeply unfair for talented Scottish students," Gallacher said. "They shouldn’t be missing out due to the failures of SNP ministers, who must now work urgently with universities to ensure applicants get the access they deserve."
Universities have cited high demand and funding caps for Scottish students as reasons for limited availability. A spokesperson for Heriot-Watt University noted that the university has already filled all its Scottish Government-funded places. Similarly, the University of Stirling stated it fills its allocated Scottish places annually due to high demand from students across the UK and internationally.
University Responses
Glasgow Caledonian University reported strong demand from Scottish applicants and expects to fill its allocated Scottish Funding Council places. A spokesman for the University of Stirling highlighted that places are in high demand from students from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and overseas, and that the Scottish Funding Council places a cap on the number of Scottish students at each institution.
A Scottish Government spokesman asserted that higher education remains a key priority and that free tuition for Scottish students is protected. The government stated there is no evidence of insufficient places for Scottish students and that fee-paying students do not access places reserved for Scottish students. The government is currently undertaking a sector-wide review, the Future Framework, to address university sustainability and success.
Tuition is free for Scottish students at Scottish universities. However, students from the rest of the UK face annual fees of £9,535, and international students can pay up to £40,000 per year. The Scottish Government subsidizes the cost of Scottish students through the Scottish Funding Council. Some universities indicated that additional courses might become available through Clearing after exam results are released next month.
