Scottish Rugby chief executive Alex Williamson has been dismissed with immediate effect following an investigation into his conduct, the organization announced.
The Scottish Rugby board concluded that Williamson's behavior "had fallen significantly below the standards we set as an organisation" after an independent investigation into matters brought to their attention earlier this year.
Williamson, who joined Scottish Rugby in January 2025, was placed on "extended leave" in May, though the reasons were not disclosed at the time. He was previously CEO of House of Fraser when it entered administration in 2018 and later led Inspiring Learning, a company that also fell into administration shortly after he began his role with Scottish Rugby.
Prior Controversies
Williamson's tenure at Scottish Rugby was not without controversy. In the past year, he faced criticism from members of the Scotland women's team regarding contract issues. Several players expressed concerns about their futures with the team, with uncertainty over contract renewals potentially impacting their ability to play for Scotland and creating financial instability.
Captain Rachael Malcolm stated that players were put in an "unfair" position ahead of the World Cup due to off-field issues disrupting their preparations. Forward Jade Konkel also noted that receiving "bombshells dropped on them right before a World Cup was not the best prep," adding that Scottish Rugby had made their buildup "really challenging both mentally and emotionally." Konkel specifically mentioned a "six-minute conversation" with Williamson regarding her contract, despite 13 years of service.
Interim Leadership
David White, the current chief financial officer at Scottish Rugby, is expected to assume Williamson's responsibilities on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is appointed.
