Photographer Kieran Dodds has dedicated over ten years to documenting individuals with red hair across the United States, uncovering a significant and unexpected historical connection.
His project, "Gingers of America," has revealed a prevalent "golden thread" of European ancestry, particularly from Scotland and Ireland, interwoven with Native American heritage. Dodds found that many Native Americans he encountered were aware of their European lineage, which often explained the presence of red hair within their communities.
"The thing that surprised me was how early on there were these Scots and Irish marrying Native Americans," Dodds stated. He highlighted the story of Lottie Wahkinney, a Comanche girl from Oklahoma, whose maternal grandparents were from Scotland. Her father, Jared, explained that his father was Comanche, while his mother was born and raised in Scotland, leading to Lottie's mixed heritage.
Jared recounted experiences of cultural curiosity, noting that during his first visit to Scotland at age 22, people inquired about his attire, expecting traditional Indigenous wear. He humorously responded, "I wear Nikes."
Dodds' photographic approach focuses on studio portraits, often against warm, dark backgrounds, emphasizing the texture and vibrance of the subjects' hair. The collection features a diverse range of individuals, from children with intricately braided hair to adults with voluminous curls and beards.
The project's scope extends beyond mere physical traits, delving into the historical narratives of migration, intermarriage, and cultural exchange that have shaped American identity. Dodds' observations underscore a history of early interactions between European settlers and Indigenous peoples, leading to genetic legacies that continue to be visible today.
Through his extensive portraiture, Dodds aims to document and celebrate the unique genetic heritage found across the American landscape, highlighting the often-overlooked stories of cultural fusion.
His work serves as a visual testament to the complex ancestry of many Americans, illustrating how historical encounters have left a lasting mark on the population's genetic diversity.
