Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham have faced criticism regarding the perception that a junior role as Trade Minister is a better position than leading Scottish Labour. Labour activists expressed concerns about the public image of Sarwar moving from his leadership position to a UK Government role.

Duncan Hothersall, editor of the Labour Hame website, highlighted the extended period between the initial reports of Sarwar's potential departure and its confirmation. He told BBC Radio Scotland that the situation sent a negative message, stating, "The bigger issue is the message it is sending that essentially the first notable thing Andy Burnham has done in terms of Scotland is to effectively put a junior minister of trade as a promotion from the position of leader of Scottish Labour. It’s a terrible, terrible bit of optics."

Hothersall also noted a sentiment that Sarwar should have stepped down after the Scottish Parliament election in May, when the party's representation decreased to 17 MSPs. He added that while individuals had accepted Sarwar's continued leadership post-election, the recent decision to depart has come as a surprise.

Cat Headley, a former Scottish Labour election candidate, described the timing of these developments as "sub-optimal, to say the least."

Anas Sarwar, who previously called for Sir Keir Starmer's resignation, is also facing questions about when Burnham offered him a new role. SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan suggested a potential internal conflict within Scottish Labour, stating, "Andy Burnham has started a full-scale civil war in Scottish Labour – he now needs to fess up to the growing suspicion that there was a pre-planned plot to put Anas Sarwar in the House of Lords."

Meanwhile, Michael Marra, Scottish Labour's finance spokesman, is reportedly preparing a leadership bid following Sarwar's resignation. Paul O’Kane, a former education spokesman for Sarwar's frontbench team, has endorsed Marra for the leadership position. O’Kane told BBC Radio Scotland that the party must focus on its future when selecting Sarwar's replacement. He described Marra as a credible and serious individual with much to offer.

O'Kane also indicated that former leadership contender Monica Lennon and Glasgow MSP Paul Sweeney are considering bids. When asked about his preference, O’Kane reiterated his support for Marra, citing their close working relationship and Marra's potential to advance the party.
