Scottish Health Board Declares Critical Incident Amid Extreme A&E Pressure

NHS Grampian has declared a critical incident due to extreme pressure on its Accident and Emergency (A&E) services and broader care provisions in Aberdeen and Elgin. The move comes ahead of a local holiday, with significant strain reported across services.

Scottish Conservative North East MSP Liam Kerr expressed deep concern, stating that lives are being put at risk, staff are under intolerable strain, and patients are suffering the consequences of the ongoing crisis. He specifically highlighted the alarming situation where ambulances are being diverted hundreds of miles to other regions, deeming it unacceptable.

Health Secretary Angela Constance acknowledged the challenges, affirming the Scottish government's commitment to improving A&E performance and reducing lengthy delays. She noted that while Scotland's healthcare challenges are not unique within the UK, a focus is placed on ensuring prompt patient care, stating that the status quo is unsustainable.

To address the situation, Constance outlined a new national plan aimed at enhancing patient flow through hospitals and announced dedicated funding of £90 million to support those awaiting treatment. Reforms to the NHS are also planned to directly improve patient services and dismantle existing bureaucratic obstacles.

Constance further emphasized that pressure on A&E wards is exacerbated by the delayed discharge of patients into social care settings. She pointed out that this issue falls under the responsibility of local councils and requires collaborative efforts from all parties involved.
