First Minister John Swinney has stated that relations between the Scottish and UK governments have "haemorrhaged" during the tenure of Douglas Alexander as Secretary of State for Scotland. Swinney, who has known Alexander for decades, said that cooperation previously described as "excellent" soured significantly with Alexander's appointment.
Swinney suggested that Alexander's involvement in the Scottish Labour Holyrood election campaign, aimed at removing Swinney from office, contributed to the deterioration of governmental ties. Despite these alleged difficulties, Swinney maintained that he bears no personal ill will and is focused on improving the lives of people in Scotland. He indicated that navigating a "Secretary of State for Scotland that is making life difficult" presents an added challenge.
A spokesperson for the UK government responded by stating that the Secretary of State for Scotland "remains committed to working collaboratively and constructively wherever possible with the Scottish government to advance the best interests of the people of Scotland."
Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed on Monday that Douglas Alexander will continue in his role as Scottish Secretary within Burnham's government.
