Three firefighters from Scotland have joined a larger United Kingdom search and rescue contingent assisting in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the region on June 24. Gavin Brown, Ian Hodgson, and Brian Richards are part of a 68-person team deployed to aid communities impacted by the disaster, which has resulted in over 2,000 reported deaths and tens of thousands of missing individuals.

The UK crew, comprising personnel from 14 fire and rescue services, is working alongside international emergency responders to locate survivors amidst the rubble. The Scottish firefighters, who departed the UK the previous Friday, have been operating in Venezuela for approximately one week. Their deployment focuses on providing specialized technical expertise crucial for ongoing search and rescue operations.

According to Andy Buchan, group commander for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the three firefighters possess advanced training in life location and technical search techniques. "We have various types of equipment we can use for sound, vibration and drones," Buchan stated, highlighting their capabilities. He also noted their proficiency in breaking and breaching, enabling them to tunnel through barriers and walls within damaged structures to access trapped survivors.
