Scottie Scheffler Dispels Rumors of U.S. Team Discord
World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler addresses narratives surrounding American players in team golf events, calling them 'very much untrue.'
Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, has pushed back against narratives suggesting division within the U.S. team during international competitions. Speaking to reporters ahead of the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, Scheffler addressed what he described as frustrating and "very much untrue" stories that have emerged from past team events, particularly the Ryder Cup.
"I think that’s something that’s probably been frustrating for us as American players, is some of the narrative that have gone on over the course of my team match play career," Scheffler stated. He specifically cited controversies like Patrick Cantlay not wearing his team hat and "stupid rumors" about the American team not being cohesive.
Scheffler referenced the incident during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, where reports suggested Cantlay’s decision not to wear a Team USA hat out of protest over player compensation had fractured the locker room. This narrative persisted, with Cantlay himself addressing the issue in 2025 in the lead-up to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. At the time, Cantlay explained that the hat simply did not fit, and adjustments were made for subsequent events.
Despite these explanations, the perception of discord within the American team was amplified by their performance in the early stages of the 2023 Ryder Cup, where European players dominated before securing a victory. Scheffler expressed that such external narratives are challenging because he often performs best when outside of such intense public scrutiny.
Scheffler's comments aim to counter what he sees as misrepresentations of the team's unity and internal dynamics. He emphasized that the focus for the American players is on their performance and camaraderie, not on unsubstantiated rumors.
