Scottie Scheffler Criticizes Fan Behavior at Presidents Cup

Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, has spoken out against a fan whose shouting disrupted his opponent's backswing during the Presidents Cup on Sunday. Scheffler paused play and directly addressed the fan, stating there was "no place for that." He later elaborated on the incident, describing the fan's actions as a significant distraction.

The confrontation occurred on the 14th hole during Scheffler's singles match against Nico Echavarria of the International team. Echavarria was preparing to hit his shot when a spectator yelled, "Go Scottie." Scheffler, visibly frustrated, stopped the play.

"There’s just no place for that. I was very frustrated," Scheffler said after the U.S. team secured their 17-13 victory. "It was honestly a big distraction. I think, for me, just because we compete and work so hard to put ourselves in these moments."

Scheffler emphasized the need for respect during players' swings, noting that a 30-second window of silence is expected. "When you have some fan who decides to insert himself into the tournament, you can say, I think, whatever you want to players, but I think there’s an amount of respect there," he stated. "You should get about 30 seconds when you’re over the ball and hitting your shot or getting ready for your shot where fans are pretty silent."

He added that such distractions can impact performance, suggesting Echavarria might not have hit his shot as poorly on the 14th hole if not for the fan's outburst. "It was just very frustrating. I don’t really want to talk about it all that much. It was frustrating."

Following the interruption, Scheffler conceded Echavarria's 32-foot putt for par, which resulted in the hole being tied. Echavarria acknowledged the crowd's impact, stating that he was heckled more than once and that it was an "unfortunate" aspect of the competition.

"It didn’t happen just once. It was a tough environment and it’s unfortunate that someway the crowds can affect performance like that," Echavarria said. "But we have the No.1 player in the world who is a class act and I wasn’t expecting for him to give me that putt for par and he did and we tied the hole."

The U.S. team ultimately clinched their 11th consecutive Presidents Cup title with the win at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.
