Scott Galloway, a marketing professor at New York University and a well-known podcaster, has been appointed as a new member of the University of California Board of Regents. The 26-member board governs California's public university system.

Galloway, who co-hosts the podcast "Pivot" with Kara Swisher and hosts "Prof G Markets," holds degrees from UCLA and UC Berkeley. His appointment brings a high-profile contrarian voice to the board, which has faced scrutiny over various cultural issues in recent years.

While Galloway identifies as a centrist Democrat, he is known for taking unconventional stances on topics ranging from technology monopolies to social issues. His appointment is seen by some as potentially injecting a different perspective into the board's discussions.

Jay Sures, Vice Chairman of UTA and a member of the UC Board of Regents since 2019, expressed support for Galloway's selection. Sures stated that the university system faces significant challenges in the coming decade and that smart individuals with expertise in business and enterprise are needed for oversight. He believes Galloway fits this description.

Sures, who has been vocal in his support for Israel, also noted that he admires Galloway's willingness to challenge conventional thinking. "He is unafraid to piss people off and that is the type of regent we need on the board," Sures said. Sures described his relationship with Galloway as more of an acquaintance than a close friend.

Galloway's addition is expected to influence the board's dynamics as it navigates complex issues in the upcoming years. His public profile and distinct viewpoints are likely to contribute to the board's deliberations on the future of the University of California system.
