Scotland's Manager Vows to Sing National Anthem
Belgian-born Sebastien Pocognoli, the second non-Scottish manager of the national team, has studied the history of "Flower of Scotland" and intends to join in the singing.
Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli has stated his intention to sing the national anthem, "Flower of Scotland," before upcoming matches. Pocognoli, who is Belgian, is only the second non-Scottish individual to manage the national team.
He will lead Scotland in their away match against Slovenia on Saturday, followed by a home game against Switzerland next Tuesday, marking the start of their Nations League campaign. Pocognoli expressed curiosity about the meaning behind the unofficial national anthem and sought clarification from chief football officer Craig Mulholland.
Having learned about the historical context, including the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce defeated Edward II, Pocognoli feels it is appropriate to participate in singing the anthem. "I think I will feel what Scotland means because right now we are in a bubble. But when we have the Switzerland game, I will really feel part of the family," Pocognoli said. "I hope we will have a great game to have a good start at home."
Pocognoli plans to sing with his "French accent" and stated, "My first feeling is to do it. So, I’m like this. When I have this impression about everything in my life, I just try to follow it. And that’s my feeling."
When asked if this was particularly fitting as an adopted Scot, he replied, "Yeah, I know. I’m very proud of that."
