The Scottish government's initiative to cap bus fares at £2 has been extended to western Scotland. The policy, part of a £10 million pilot program, was previously tested in the Highlands, Western and Northern Isles, Moray, and Argyll and Bute over the past year.

Participating bus operators in the newly covered western regions will be reimbursed by Transport Scotland, a public body. First Bus, a major operator in areas including Glasgow and Lanarkshire, has indicated its intention to collaborate with the government to ensure the scheme's success.

Scottish government figures have stated that bus travel is the most utilized form of public transport in Scotland. They aim to make it "as affordable, accessible and attractive as possible," citing its importance for economic growth, sustainable travel, and environmental protection.

However, the £2 cap has drawn some criticism. Just days before the extension, a bus company raised concerns about the logistical challenges of implementing the cap across areas where not all operators are participating. Critics have described the policy as a "half a solution."
