Scotland Manager Pocognoli Names Squad, McBurnie Returns

New Scotland manager Sebastien Pocognoli has announced his inaugural squad, signaling a significant shift in team composition. Half of the 28-man selection for the upcoming Nations League campaign were not part of the World Cup squad just three months prior, with 12 players dropping out and 14 new inclusions.

Pocognoli's approach emphasizes a more attacking style, aiming for a higher defensive line and counter-pressing, a departure from the perceived cautious tactics of his predecessor, Steve Clarke. "I am quite direct in my game offensively and defensively," Pocognoli stated. "I try to be a little bit more on the front foot. We have quality in the team to play direct but with ID, to play through the ground, to explore the depth and be as quick as possible in the opposite box and as high as possible on the pitch."

Among the notable recalls is striker Oli McBurnie, who last represented Scotland five years ago. Despite scoring 19 goals for Hull City last season and helping them achieve promotion to the Premier League, he was overlooked for the World Cup. Pocognoli explained his decision to bring McBurnie back, stating, "When I arrived, I did not have any fixed perception about what had happened in the past - I just needed to make my own perception." He added that McBurnie is in good shape and eager to contribute without a sense of revenge.

New faces in the squad include Robbie Ure, currently playing for Sevilla, and former England youth international Luis Binks, who anchors Brondby's defense. Other newcomers like Colby Donovan, Josh McPake, Luke Graham, Stephen Welsh, and Jon McCracken have also earned call-ups based on their club performances.

Pocognoli emphasized the importance of player buy-in and maintaining the positive team atmosphere fostered under the previous management. He personally contacted each player selected to discuss his vision and gather insights. "The most important thing is to keep this atmosphere, but with expectation and demands," Pocognoli said. "It's a good group of players, that's why they have been at tournaments over the last four years because of the cohesion, so I don't want to change this."

Several players who were part of the World Cup squad have been omitted due to various reasons, including injury, loss of form, or age. Craig Gordon has retired, while Che Adams, Scott McTominay, and Lawrence Shankland are sidelined through injury. Others like Lyndon Dykes, Ross Stewart, and Dom Hyam are noted as being over 30, and players such as Anthony Ralston, John Souttar, and Tyler Fletcher need more consistent club game time.

Despite the changes, key players from the previous era, including Angus Gunn, Andy Robertson, Ryan Christie, John McGinn, Kenny McLean, and Billy Gilmour, remain integral to the squad.
