Scotland Defender Praises Coach's Tactical Acumen in Slovenia Match

Scotland defender Stephen Welsh credited new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli with demonstrating top-class coaching and tactical skill during the team's match against Slovenia.

Following a disjointed first half where Slovenia threatened to score, Scotland dominated the second half, creating numerous chances and controlling the tempo of the game. Despite a failure to convert these opportunities into goals, resulting in a draw, Welsh emphasized the positive impact of Pocognoli's halftime interventions.

"Full credit to him – because it worked," Welsh stated. "He showed us some details on the video and told us what we needed to change." According to Welsh, Pocognoli maintained a calm demeanor at halftime, offering constructive feedback and encouraging the players to execute the necessary adjustments.

Key tactical shifts included repositioning midfielder Billy Gilmour to increase his involvement on the ball and instructing the team to press more aggressively higher up the pitch. "With the tweaks he made, I think that shows real top-quality coaching to be honest. We dominated the second half," Welsh added.

Welsh, who made his debut playing on the left of Scotland's back three, also expressed pride in securing a clean sheet away from home in Europe. "As a back five, and Gunny as well, that's what you want. I don't think Slovenia had many chances in the second half," he said.

He believes the team's improved second-half performance, achieved with only five days of training under the new management, should excite supporters about the team's potential. "I hope the fans are excited by the second half, because we've only had five days. I think Slovenia have been together for a couple of years now," Welsh noted.

The defender acknowledged the upcoming challenge against Switzerland, a team that reached the World Cup quarterfinals. "Switzerland are a top team," he said. "We know it's going to be a tough test, but happy it's at home, so we can use the crowd to our advantage."

Welsh is optimistic about Scotland's quality, both on the field and from the bench, and is focused on starting their next match against Switzerland positively. "It's up to us to put on a good performance," he concluded.
