Schneider Admits Defensive Lapses in Rangers' Loss to Bruins

Defenseman Braden Schneider acknowledged a critical error in the New York Rangers' season-opening 3-0 loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. The defensive pairing of Schneider and rookie Alberts Smits, which began the game under scrutiny due to Smits' debut, found itself back in the spotlight late in the third period when Schneider was caught out of position.

As three Rangers forwards changed during a late-third-period sequence, Schneider was left alone on the rush. He was subsequently deked by the Bruins' JJ Peterka, with the puck going between Schneider's legs. Peterka then scored, doubling the Bruins' lead 52 seconds after they had broken the scoreless tie. The play has emerged as a notable moment from the game.

"You get that shift and you get caught out there a little too long," Schneider told The Post on Wednesday. "I get caught with a bad gap, and, I mean, I made a bad read. Not much you can do. He made a good play and just try to move on from it."

This incident marks a challenging start to a significant season for Schneider. He was a restricted free agent at the end of the previous season and re-signed with the Rangers on a one-year contract. He is expected to face a similar contract situation next summer.

Schneider had previously expressed a desire to improve upon his performance from the previous season, during which he was given a more prominent role due to Adam Fox's injury. He was on the ice for a team-worst 63 goals at 5-on-5 last season. The defensive pairing with Smits is expected to continue drawing attention as the season progresses.

Smits, 18, who was selected fifth overall in the June draft, played 16:54 in his debut, recording two hits, one blocked shot, and two giveaways. Head coach Mike Sullivan commented on Smits' performance, noting that the game initially appeared fast for him, but he settled down as it continued. Sullivan suggested that Smits gets into trouble when he attempts overly complex plays and advised him to simplify his game. "But I think as a young player, you’re gonna make those type of mistakes — and you’ll learn through those experiences, and our job is to try to help him do that," Sullivan said.

In other team news, defenseman Vincent Iorio, who was listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, was assigned to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack after clearing waivers. The Wolf Pack's blue line will now include Iorio, Urho Vaakanainen, Marc Del Gaizo, Dennis Cholowski, and Drew Fortescue, a group with a combined 497 NHL games of experience.

Regarding the Rangers' schedule, which includes five games in eight days to start the season after a condensed training camp, Sullivan indicated he would reserve judgment until after the initial stretch. He noted that playing games early can help establish a routine and build conditioning for game situations, which is beneficial after a shorter training camp.
