Schefter: Consequences Expected for Commanders After Overtime Blunder
NFL insider Adam Schefter believes a significant clock management error will lead to repercussions for Washington.
NFL insider Adam Schefter anticipates future consequences for the Washington Commanders following a critical clock management error that resulted in a 27-27 tie against the New York Giants. The surprising finish to Sunday's game has drawn comparisons to the infamous "Miracle at the Meadowlands" in 1978, which led to significant personnel changes for the Giants.
"There were consequences, and we don’t know when it’ll be, but I would imagine in time there’s going to be consequences from this game," Schefter stated on ESPN's "Get Up." He suggested that the blunder could have a lasting impact on head coach Dan Quinn.
Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan echoed Schefter's sentiment, calling the mistake "the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life." Ryan emphasized the unprecedented nature of the error and predicted it could lead to Quinn's dismissal. "This stuff right here gets you fired," Ryan commented, referencing Quinn's past as defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons when they famously blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI.
The Commanders had possession at the end of overtime but failed to execute a game-winning play. With eight seconds remaining, quarterback Jayden Daniels took a sack, allowing the clock to expire before the team could attempt a potential 42-yard field goal.
Commentary from the Commanders' own radio booth described the clock management as "brutal" and "not how you execute." Both Quinn and Daniels have taken responsibility for the outcome, but public and media reactions have largely placed the blame on coaching decisions.
