Schaefer's Overtime Goal Lifts Islanders Over Wild, Handing Minnesota First Loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Matthew Schaefer scored in overtime to give the New York Islanders a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night, handing the Wild their first loss of the season. The win marked a significant morale boost for the Islanders, who were testing themselves on the road against a top contender.

The Islanders matched the Wild blow-for-blow throughout the game, showcasing a smart, physical style of play. They protected the middle of the ice and largely dictated the game's tempo, limiting rush chances for both teams. This approach proved effective in an environment where the Islanders have found success.

Despite an upper-body injury to defenseman Ryan Pulock early in the game, the Islanders entered the third period tied 2-2. They held an 8-3 advantage in high-danger chances at five-on-five during the first two periods, indicating strong defensive play even with a defenseman sidelined.

Adam Pelech gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead early in the third period after a puck battle won by Victor Eklund and a subsequent shot that deflected off Michael McCarron. However, the Wild's Matt Boldy tied the game with under four minutes remaining, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, Schaefer netted the game-winner on a two-on-one rush. This was the Islanders' fourth attempt at securing an overtime win this season, and their first successful attempt.

Goaltender Ilya Sorokin faced questions after allowing three goals, including what were described as potentially soft goals on the Wild's first and tying goals. Joel Eriksson Ek scored for the Wild just 27 seconds into the game, and Quinn Hughes tied it at 2-2 late in the second period.

Earlier, Schaefer had tied the game at 1-1 in the first period, capitalizing on a rebound. Bo Horvat gave the Islanders a temporary 2-1 lead in the second period with a deflection off a pass from Simon Holmstrom.

The Islanders' penalty kill was effective, successfully navigating three penalties throughout the game. The victory comes ahead of a challenging homestand that will feature games against the Oilers, Hurricanes, and Devils.
