A Scarsdale resident known for her advocacy for people with disabilities was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death in her home by her 26-year-old son, Chester Green. The incident occurred between July 5 and July 7, according to Westchester prosecutors.
Marian Green, 71, had reportedly struggled for years to help her son find his place in society. A family friend, Nancy Meyers Silverman, told The Post that Green frequently discussed her concerns for Chester, who she described as socially awkward and having some form of developmental condition. Silverman noted that Green encouraged her son's interest in blacksmithing and included him in community and political events in an effort to foster his engagement.
"She wanted him to be a productive part of society, and she was concerned because I know her husband passed away a couple of years ago, and she just wanted Chester to thrive," Silverman said. "There was never a meeting where we didn’t discuss Chester, or she didn’t bring up wanting the best for him."
Chester Green has been arraigned on a second-degree murder charge and ordered held without bail. Police have stated that Marian Green was killed in her home, valued at $2.5 million, in the wealthy Westchester County suburb.
Friends and former classmates described Chester Green as someone who struggled to fit in. While never exhibiting violent tendencies, he attended special education classes and was considered by some to be "off the beaten track." One former classmate recalled him as sometimes being "mean, violent, loud," while another stated their mother had previously prevented them from interacting with him due to safety concerns.
Marian Green was an active community member and served as the chair of the village's Advisory Council for People with Disabilities. She and her son lived alone since the death of her husband several years ago.
Scarsdale, a suburb that has been ranked among the wealthiest in the U.S., rarely experiences violent crime. The last homicide in the village was in 2016. Chester Green is currently being held at the Westchester County Jail and is scheduled to return to court on August 5.
