Savannah Guthrie has taken a brief leave from her hosting duties on NBC's "Today" show to be with her family during the ongoing investigation into her mother Nancy Guthrie's disappearance. Guthrie, 54, has missed consecutive broadcasts this week, with Laura Jarrett and Sheinelle Jones filling in for her.
Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her Arizona home on February 1. Despite efforts by the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department, she has not yet been located. Last week, Savannah Guthrie spoke about the "agony and unending trauma" her family is experiencing, telling KOLD 13 News that they are "actively trying to find our mom." She also expressed gratitude to the Tucson community and the law enforcement agencies involved.
In June, Guthrie became emotional on air while discussing a ransom note reportedly received in February. The note allegedly claimed her mother had died. However, reports indicated that not all ransom notes were considered genuine. The FBI has stated that while some demands may be legitimate and are being investigated, others have been deemed to be extortion attempts without validity. The case remains an active kidnapping for ransom investigation, with local authorities leading the efforts and the FBI providing assistance.
Guthrie had previously returned to the "Today" show in April, two months after her mother's initial disappearance. At that time, sources indicated that "Today" show staff were instructed to maintain a sense of normalcy and not discuss the investigation on air.
