Saudi Arabia Postpones Tennis Exhibition Amid Deadly Attacks

The Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition event in Saudi Arabia has been postponed following a series of deadly attacks on the host city of Riyadh. The event, which was set to feature Grand Slam champions Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev, was originally scheduled to take place over three days beginning October 21.

Other notable players slated to participate included Australia's Alex de Minaur and American duo Taylor Fritz and Learner Tien. The exhibition had faced significant uncertainty since the Houthi movement in Yemen launched attacks on Saudi Arabia over the weekend. A missile strike on Riyadh's airport on Saturday resulted in 13 fatalities and injured over 300 people.

Saudi Arabia's energy minister has pledged a "serious" response after the kingdom's oil and gas facilities were also targeted by the Iran-backed Houthis. The regional conflict has led to the postponement of several Saudi Pro League soccer fixtures, including one involving Cristiano Ronaldo's team, Al-Nassr. Three matches were postponed on Tuesday, with Al-Nassr's game against Al-Ahli moved to March.

Organizers stated that the decision to postpone the Six Kings Slam reflects a commitment to delivering events to the highest standards. An assessment of organizational and logistical challenges, and their potential impact on the audience experience, led to the rescheduling. The tournament has been moved to December 27-30. Last year's event was won by Italy's Jannik Sinner.

The ANB Arena, the venue for the Six Kings Slam, is located in the northern part of Riyadh, approximately 31 kilometers from King Khalid International Airport. In other sports news, the Asian Tour golf tournament is closely monitoring the situation ahead of its season-closing PIF Saudi International, scheduled for November 18-21 at the Riyadh Golf Club. Discussions are ongoing with Golf Saudi regarding the feasibility of hosting the event in Riyadh. Additionally, former Manchester United star Ronaldo scored for Al-Nassr in an AFC Champions League match that was delayed by an hour due to a missile alert on Monday.
