Sauce Gardner Calls Own Effort Against Commanders 'Embarrassing'

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner has described his own performance during a recent game against the Washington Commanders as "embarrassing to watch." The admission comes after video circulated showing Gardner appearing to slow down on an 87-yard catch-and-run by Commanders receiver Antonio Williams.

Gardner, a two-time First Team All-Pro, spoke to reporters on Wednesday about the play, which occurred in the third quarter of the Colts' victory. Although the play was ultimately called back due to a penalty, Gardner expressed dismay at his perceived lack of effort, especially when compared to his teammates.

"That’s the embarrassing feeling right there," Gardner said. "Seeing other guys on the D-line running past me, that’s the part that’s like, ‘Yo, that’s crazy.’ When I’m loafing and then I’m seeing him slide past me, it’s like, ‘Bro, that’s embarrassing.’ Yeah, that’s unacceptable."

Gardner acknowledged that he had seen a flag thrown before the catch and assumed it was against the Commanders, but he did not want to use that as an excuse for his reduced effort on the play. He also stated that there were multiple instances during the game where his hustle was lacking.

"There was multiple plays where my effort was not there," Gardner said. "That’s not what I stand for. That’s not the type of person I am. That’s not the type of player I am. And that’ll never happen again."

Gardner was acquired by the Colts last season in a trade that sent two first-round picks to the New York Jets. In eight starts for the Colts since the trade, Gardner has recorded 30 tackles and seven passes defended.
