Saturday Night Live Skewers Republicans, Ailing Mitch McConnell, Sparking MAGA Outrage
The sketch comedy show's latest cold open targeted GOP midterm strategies and Senator McConnell's public appearances, drawing sharp criticism from conservative viewers.
Saturday Night Live has ignited fury among MAGA supporters with its latest cold open, which satirized Republican efforts to galvanize voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections and depicted an ailing Senator Mitch McConnell. The sketch aimed to lampoon the GOP's campaign strategies as polling data suggests a challenging electoral landscape for the party.
As the November 3 midterm elections approach, projections indicate a favorable outlook for the Democratic Party, with expectations of regaining control of the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate. This contrasts with the Republican sweep of both chambers in 2024, which coincided with Donald Trump's Electoral College victory. However, key demographic groups that previously supported the Republican party have reportedly begun shifting their allegiance.
In response, the GOP has reportedly intensified its outreach efforts, featuring advertisements during conservative television programming and releasing a series of videos from Donald Trump on Truth Social, urging Republicans to vote. Saturday Night Live's cold open directly alluded to these tactics and the shifting demographics, specifically referencing the departure of Hispanic voters and traditional Republicans from the party's base.
The sketch featured cast member Ashley Padilla remarking on the perceived bleak midterm polling and the hope that ad spots would excite the base. The show then depicted cast member Marcello Hernandez as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with Padilla stating, "We really need your help with Latino voters." Hernandez proceeded to deliver a mock speech in Spanish, criticizing Donald Trump and joking about U.S. actions in Venezuela and Iran, as well as Trump's dietary habits.
Following this, Padilla declared, "We need this next guy to get the Reagan Republicans out to the polls." At this point, cast member Mike Day was wheeled out in a wheelchair, portraying Senator Mitch McConnell. McConnell has been largely absent from public view since a hospitalization in June, and his return to the Senate floor has been marked by instances where he appears confused when addressed by reporters. He has frequently responded to questions by flashing a peace sign, a behavior that has generated concern and widespread online commentary.
Day's portrayal mirrored McConnell's recent public appearances, with the senator character maintaining a confused expression and remaining silent. When prompted to speak or act, Day's character eventually displayed the signature peace sign before Padilla prompted him to deliver the show's closing line. The audience reportedly responded with laughter, but the segment quickly drew condemnation from MAGA fans on social media platforms.
Online reactions included accusations of the show being "woke" and "not doing well," with some viewers questioning the appropriateness of mocking individuals with health issues. One user commented, "So its ok to laugh at disabled people now? Ok got it." Another asserted, "We had [braindead] Biden for 4 years and they never [did] anything like this," while another predicted, "if they push it, Trump will probably have it canceled." A fifth viewer expressed strong disapproval, stating, "I swear to God if @snl #SaturdayNightLive does a Trump opening for the premiere, I'm not watching the whole season."
