Sarkisian Addresses Controversial Post-Game Interviews and AI Video Incident

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has broken his silence regarding two controversial interviews following the Longhorns' dramatic 24-23 comeback victory over then-No. 1 Ohio State. Sarkisian faced criticism for a brief, 10-word exchange with ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe, during which he departed before she could complete her first question. He also addressed quarterback Arch Manning's earlier remarks about an AI-generated video depicting Sarkisian slapping Rowe.

Sarkisian acknowledged that his post-game interaction with Rowe could have been handled better. "If hindsight’s 20/20, if I could do it all over again, I would have exuded more patience in that moment and and and sat through and waited for the interview with Holly," Sarkisian stated, per On Texas Football. He emphasized his respect for ESPN and Rowe, noting a long-standing relationship that predates his coaching career. "ESPN is a great partner of ours. We know we’re going to have more opportunities with that crew covering us, and we’re looking forward to those opportunities. So, could have definitely handled that situation better with a little bit more patience in the moment."

The initial interview clip went viral, prompting the creation of an AI-generated video showing Sarkisian slapping Rowe. During a press conference, Manning mentioned seeing the video and described it as hilarious, referencing the doctored slap. He later apologized for his comment, calling it "insensitive" and vowing to be more thoughtful.

Sarkisian characterized Manning's comment as a mistake and reiterated that neither he nor the program condones violence. "Nowhere do we condone domestic violence or violence against women. Nothing in our program says that nor Arch individually," Sarkisian said. "I think if he could take it back, he would. But he has since apologized to Holly. He’s made a public apology, and you know our goal is that we can move forward and him be the guy that that we all know that he is and what he represents."

Rowe confirmed that she had spoken with Manning and appreciated his apology, stating, "We move forward with respect and kindness for one another."

Sarkisian also addressed missing his scheduled halftime interview with ESPN's Laura Rutledge. He explained that ESPN was experiencing technical difficulties, forcing him to make a quick decision between waiting for the interview or joining his team to strategize for the second half. Rutledge had previously stated on air that Sarkisian had waited and attempted to conduct the interview before heading to the locker room. Sarkisian later spoke with Rutledge after halftime to convey his team's mindset for the remainder of the game.

Following their victory over Ohio State, the Texas Longhorns are now ranked No. 1 nationally and are set to host UTSA on Saturday.
