Saracens Overcome Red Card in Thrilling 12-Try Season Opener

Saracens began their Premier Rugby campaign with a dramatic 40-38 victory over Leicester, overcoming a second-half red card to secure a 12-try thriller. The match, the final fixture of the league's opening weekend, featured a remarkable 78 total points and will be difficult to surpass in terms of excitement this season.

Despite playing with 14 men for the final 20 minutes following a red card for Nick Isiekwe in the 54th minute for a dangerous tackle, Saracens chose to pursue a match-winning try rather than a draw. Their decision to kick to the corner paid off, leading to a sin-binning for Leicester's Tareq Haffar and the decisive try from Rotimi Segun, his second of the match. Saracens head coach Joe Shaw praised the team's resilience and ambition, stating, "We came for the win and to put a marker down. I was very proud that we went for the corner."

The victory means four of the five opening-round fixtures were won by the away team, an unusual trend in a league where home advantage is typically significant. This round also saw a record 52 tries scored across the opening weekend.

Saracens faced significant disruption, with Isiekwe's red card compounded by injuries to backs Olly Hartley and Tobias Elliott, leading to England back-row Ben Earl filling in at centre. Key forwards Jamie George, George Martin, and Rhys Carre, along with Owen Farrell, were also absent. Elliot Daly notably played in four different positions due to the team's injury struggles.

Maro Itoje, Saracens captain, appeared in strong form after the summer break, and scrum-half Tomos Williams was named player of the match. "The adaption of the boys and the clarity was excellent," Shaw commented.

Leicester, despite a slow start, fought back with Gabriel Hamer-Webb scoring a hat-trick and Aaron Wainwright also impressing. However, the team ultimately fell short. Saracens' win marks a strong start to their bid for a Premier Rugby title, having not won the championship since 2023. Earl's contribution included sealing a bonus point with Saracens' fourth try.

Leicester head coach Geoff Parling acknowledged the team's inaccuracies and 17 turnovers, despite being without 15 players due to injury, including captain Ollie Chessum. "Losing is not good enough but I’ve seen enough to realise there are lots of good things we can do," Parling said.
