Body-camera footage released by the Santa Monica Police Department shows the moment officers fatally shot a man who advanced on them wielding a knife on Aug. 22. The incident occurred while officers were investigating an unrelated matter near the Santa Monica Pier.
The video captures two officers speaking with witnesses when they observe a man holding a serrated knife overhead and moving towards them. The officers repeatedly shouted for the man to drop the weapon as they backed away. The man increased his pace, and one officer discharged a single round, striking him in the chest. He then dropped the knife, and an officer kicked it away before administering CPR.
The deceased individual has been identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died. No officers or bystanders were injured during the encounter.
Investigators found two additional knives belonging to Rodriguez: one on his person and another in his backpack. The knife Rodriguez was holding when he charged the officers had a serrated edge, described as similar to a combat knife. A second knife in his backpack was sheathed and also appeared similar. A third knife, found in his pocket, had a metal grip with holes and wrapped material.
Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob stated that the department has a responsibility to be transparent about the incident. "Our officers answer calls for help knowing the circumstances can change in an instant," Jacob said. "On August 22, they encountered an armed individual while assisting with an unrelated call." He added, "When a life is lost during a police encounter, our responsibility to provide a clear and open account is especially important. Releasing this video is an important step in providing that account to our community."
Santa Monica Mayor Caroline Torosis commended the officers' actions, saying, "I am grateful for the courage our officers showed in the face of an armed threat and for the lifesaving efforts that followed." She further stated, "Their safety is inseparable from the safety of the people they serve. The officers and personnel who responded that day deserve our gratitude and support for their bravery, compassion, and commitment to Santa Monica."
Multiple investigations into the incident are ongoing, including a review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, an internal Santa Monica Police Department inquiry, and a criminal investigation.
