‘Santa Clarita Karen’ Apologizes After Viral Confrontation, Business Suffers

Francesca Ortega, a California business owner who gained notoriety as “Santa Clarita Karen” after a viral video captured her confronting a street taco vendor and threatening to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has issued an apology. The incident, which sparked widespread outrage, has led to significant backlash against Ortega and her cleaning company.

In an Instagram apology video, Ortega stated that the viral clip was taken out of context and that her behavior was unacceptable. "I didn't know the seriousness that would be taken to mention the word ICE," she said, acknowledging the gravity of her words. Ortega, who is pregnant, attributed her outburst to anger and an impulsive personality, expressing regret for her actions and the impact they have had.

However, her apology has not appeased online critics, many of whom believe her remorse is insincere and stems from the consequences she is now facing. Social media users have accused her of only apologizing after becoming the target of public anger and questioned her true remorse. One user commented, "The harasser doesn’t like being harassed? Go figure 🙄 And you’re upset about your family’s life being disrupted? What do you think about the taco stands family if you had actually called ICE? Get a grip!”

The fallout has significantly affected Ortega’s cleaning business, which she claims to have built over a decade. She reported that her company has been inundated with negative reviews, with formerly stellar ratings now flooded with one-star feedback. Ortega also stated that she and her family have received threats, leading to fear of public outings. She expressed concern for her employees, emphasizing that they have bills to pay and rely on the business for their livelihood.

The situation escalated further when a critic, Ricardo Morales, told Fox 11 that Ortega retaliated by changing her company's listed Google phone number to his. Morales reported receiving angry calls and texts from strangers who believed they were contacting Ortega's business, calling her actions "vindictive."

Ortega maintained that the confrontation with the vendor began after the vendor photographed her license plate and that she did not intend to threaten her. She stated she retaliated against critics because they would not stop contacting her.
