Sandra Bullock has revealed the extraordinary lengths she went to in order to protect her newborn son, Louis, from intense media scrutiny during the height of her then-husband Jesse James's cheating scandal in 2010. The star shared these recollections in a recent profile for Interview Magazine, speaking with Jennifer Aniston.
Bullock, who secretly adopted Louis in late 2009, recalled the intense media frenzy that followed the revelations about James's infidelity. To evade photographers who were unaware she had a newborn, Bullock described placing Louis's car carrier inside a hockey bag and zipping it closed before carrying it to her car. "When the poop hit the fan for me, when, we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn," Bullock explained.
She likened the constant vigilance required as a public figure to operating like the CIA. Bullock also mentioned a recent instance where someone close to her betrayed her trust by selling information, which she found deeply upsetting. The actress's marriage to James, founder of West Coast Choppers, began in 2005 and ended in divorce in 2010 after his affair with model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee came to light. James subsequently entered a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.
Beyond the intense public pressures, Bullock emphasized her current career choices are dictated by her children. She stated that if her children cannot accompany her, she will not take on projects, prioritizing their schedules over her professional commitments. "If the kids can’t be with me, I’m not going," she said.
Bullock, who also adopted daughter Laila in 2015, is preparing for her children to become more independent. She noted that Louis, now 16, will be leaving home soon and reflected on the eventual shift in her role as a mother. She expressed a desire to build a social life outside of her career and find fulfillment in new ways.
Regarding her children's futures, Bullock described her daughter Laila as having a strong, independent spirit, suggesting she might pursue a career in film directing or as a Formula 1 driver. Bullock's upcoming film, Practical Magic 2, is described as a tribute to Laila. The actress shared that she sees her daughter's bravery and resilience, contrasting it with her own more fearful nature. She aims for the film to serve as an apology and a message of support to Laila.
Bullock also commented on the evolving nature of parenting, noting that while she hopes her children will eventually move out, she is also open to them returning, although she anticipates Laila might be more eager to establish her independence.
Bullock's latest film project, Practical Magic 2, is scheduled for release on September 10. The actress has also been featured in a series of avant-garde photoshoots for the magazine, showcasing various high-fashion ensembles.
