Sandra Bullock has revealed the extreme lengths she went to in order to protect her then-newborn son, Louis, from paparazzi during the height of the cheating scandal involving her ex-husband, Jesse James. The 62-year-old actress recounted the experience in a recent interview with Jennifer Aniston for Interview Magazine.
Bullock, who secretly adopted Louis in late 2009, described how she once placed her infant son in a hockey bag to conceal him from photographers. "When the poop hit the fan for me, when, we know what that is, I realized I had to get out of the house because the paparazzi were going to descend, and no one knew I had a newborn," Bullock explained. She detailed how she put Louis in his car carrier, then placed that inside a hockey bag, zipping it around him before carrying it to her car as if it were an ordinary piece of sports equipment.
The intense media attention followed the revelation of James's infidelity in 2010 with model Michelle "Bombshell" McGee. Bullock's marriage to James, which began in 2005, ultimately ended in divorce that same year. James subsequently checked into a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.
Bullock also reflected on the need for constant vigilance in her public life, likening it to operating like the CIA. She shared that privacy can be compromised by those close to a public figure, noting a recent instance where someone near her "broke" her heart by selling information.
Beyond the scandal, Bullock discussed her priorities shifting to her children, Louis, now 16, and her adopted daughter Laila, 12, whom she welcomed in 2015. She stated that she will not accept work that requires travel if her children cannot accompany her, emphasizing that their schedules are more important than her career. "If the kids can’t be with me, I’m not going," she said.
As her children grow, Bullock is beginning to prepare for a future where they will be independent. She mentioned that Louis will be leaving home soon and that she is considering how to find fulfillment outside of her maternal role and acting career. She expressed a desire to build her social life and "have more fun."
Bullock also spoke about her daughter Laila, describing her as a "wild child" and a "survivor" who has a strong personality and an interest in films like the Scream series. Bullock noted that her upcoming film, Practical Magic 2, is intended as a "love letter" to Laila, an apology and an encouragement for her bravery.
Regarding her career, Bullock stated she is currently "so burnt" and not planning to return to acting immediately. She prefers to keep her work based in Los Angeles to accommodate her children's school schedules, with any travel only occurring during the summer months.
