Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly about the private battle her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, waged against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) before his death in August 2023. Randall passed away at age 57 after a three-year fight with the neurodegenerative disease.

In an appearance on the "Smartless" podcast, Bullock shared that Randall had explicitly asked her not to disclose his diagnosis. "He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to," she recalled. This decision, she explained, led to feelings of isolation during his illness. "His desire to not share his diagnosis 'isolated [her] in the process.'"

Bullock revealed that she felt she was grieving Randall long before his physical passing due to the rapid progression of ALS. "My person left a lot earlier than the body left," she stated. She noted that his diagnosis coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicated her ability to manage his care, especially given her child's severe asthma. "The diagnosis came almost at the same time with the cloak of the pandemic," Bullock said.

She also recounted the difficulty of keeping Randall's condition a secret from their children and friends, admitting that only her sister was aware for a significant period. "I wasn't allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for, for a while. It's a huge weight."

ALS, also known as motor neurone disease, is a rare and incurable condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to progressive paralysis. Approximately half of individuals diagnosed with ALS have a life expectancy of three years, though some can live for decades longer. The disease gained widespread recognition in the U.S. as "Lou Gehrig's disease" after the baseball player succumbed to it in 1941.

Bullock and Randall first met in 2015 when he was hired to photograph her oldest child's birthday party. They made their relationship public later that year. In 2021, Bullock referred to Randall as "the love of my life" during an appearance on "Red Table Talk," by which time he was privately battling ALS.

Randall's family released a statement following his death, stating, "Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private, and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request." The family also expressed gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him and requested privacy during their period of grief.

Bullock has two adopted children, Louis and Laila, and Randall had an adult daughter, Skylar, from a previous relationship. While the couple never officially married, reports indicated they exchanged vows in a private ceremony in the Bahamas in 2017.
