Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the three-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) that her partner, Bryan Randall, endured before his death in August 2023. Bullock, 62, shared on the "SmartLess" podcast that Randall had specifically asked her not to disclose his illness, a request that she initially found isolating.

"He asked me not to share," Bullock explained. "I know why he asked me not to." She noted that only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was initially aware of Randall's health struggles. The actress admitted that managing Randall's private health crisis while raising her two children during the COVID-19 pandemic created a "trifecta that was pretty dark."

Over time, Bullock confided in close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, the wife of "SmartLess" co-host Jason Bateman. However, she described a sense of grief that began years before Randall's physical passing, stating, "I started grieving Brian four years before he passed. There was something that had shifted."

Randall, a photographer, died at the age of 57. His family released a statement at the time of his death, emphasizing his choice to keep his ALS journey private and expressing gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him. The family requested privacy to grieve.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, progressively impairing a patient's ability to speak, move, eat, and breathe. There is currently no cure for the disease.

Bullock and Randall met in 2015 when he photographed her son Louis's fifth birthday party. They began dating shortly thereafter and publicly appeared as a couple in October of that year. Bullock had previously described Randall as "the love of my life."

Randall was a father to a daughter, Skylar, from a previous relationship, and helped raise Bullock's adopted children, son Louis and daughter Laila. Bullock was previously married to Jesse James from 2005 to 2010.
