Sandra Bullock has shared details about how she informed her children about her late partner Bryan Randall's amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis, a journey that unfolded over three years before his death.
Randall, a model, died in August 2023 at the age of 57 after a three-year battle with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Bullock and Randall were in a relationship for eight years.
During an appearance on the "SmartLess" podcast, Bullock, 62, stated that her son Louis, then 16, and daughter Laila, then 12, were fully aware of Randall's illness. She described her children as "very astute" during Randall's private struggle.
"Oh, completely aware. Absolutely aware, because eventually, once there is a situation where you're bedridden, we all have to go there," Bullock said. "It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it."
Bullock noted that her children observed the physical changes in Randall and the behavioral shifts that affected everyone in the household. "They could see. They have eyes. And they are very, very astute kids," she said.
She recounted that her children processed the situation differently. Louis, her eldest, began to disengage about two years before Randall's passing, finding the dynamic unhealthy. "He's like, 'You know what? I'm here for you.' I didn't want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time," Bullock explained, adding that she wanted him to experience childhood, especially during the pandemic.
Bullock admitted to feeling guilt about asking for help, as she perceived others were also suffering. Louis chose to provide support in ways that were manageable for him.
Laila, however, remained more closely bonded with Randall for a longer period, until about six months before his death. Bullock recalled that Laila eventually asked not to be called over for visits. Bullock assured her daughter that she would accompany her on any visits and would be there to leave if needed. Bullock also made efforts to provide her children with space by using a different side of their home when they requested it.
Bullock and Randall first met in 2015, and they made their first public appearance together in August of that same year. Following Randall's death, Bullock prioritized healing and spending time with her children, maintaining a low profile for approximately six years before returning to work, including filming "Practical Magic 2."
