San Francisco's annual Trans March concluded Friday night with clashes between demonstrators and police, resulting in multiple arrests and injuries to two officers. The confrontation escalated when officers moved to arrest an individual suspected of spray-painting a building.
Witnesses reported that the situation intensified as several officers subdued the individual, prompting other marchers to surround the scene and voice objections. Video footage from the event shows officers engaged in a physical altercation with protesters who were reportedly trying to intervene in the arrest.
"The cops dragged them and threw them to the ground, and then protesters got in there trying to stop them," witness Nora Long told the San Francisco Chronicle. "From there, the cops responded with more violence."
Authorities stated that five adults were arrested. Three were taken into custody on suspicion of assault and vandalism, while two others were arrested for allegedly interfering with officers. The identities of the suspects and further details on their charges have not been released as the investigation is ongoing.
Two officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries while managing the crowd during the incident, according to the San Francisco Police Department. The department issued a statement affirming its support for the First Amendment right to peaceful protest but emphasized that "criminal activity will not be tolerated."
Some participants expressed that the police presence and the subsequent confrontation detracted from the event's purpose. "It didn’t fit the tone of the march and the occasion. It could be traumatizing for people there – especially when the event is commemorating a protest against police brutality," said marcher Jenna England.
The Trans March is recognized as one of the largest gatherings of transgender individuals globally and serves as a kickoff event for San Francisco Pride weekend. The SFPD reported that at least 25 police vehicles were stationed near the end of the procession, with officers making arrests for alleged vandalism as the march concluded.
