San Francisco Ranks as Top California Foodie Destination in National Study
The city secured the third spot nationally, with other California metros also recognized for their culinary offerings.
San Francisco has been named the third-best city for foodies in America, according to WalletHub's annual list of the nation's top culinary destinations. The study evaluated over 180 cities based on affordability and the diversity, accessibility, and quality of their food scenes.
WalletHub's analysis considered factors such as grocery prices, the cost of restaurant meals, sales tax, and the availability of restaurants, food trucks, farmers markets, craft breweries, coffee shops, and specialty food stores per capita. San Francisco performed strongly, particularly in the diversity and quality categories.
The city boasts a high number of restaurants per capita and a significant selection of affordable, highly-rated restaurants. It also features 25 Michelin-starred restaurants, including three with the coveted three-star rating. Beyond fine dining, San Francisco was recognized for its restaurant diversity, access to healthy food options, numerous food festivals, and cooking schools. The city also leads the nation in the number of herb and spice stores, international grocery stores, and craft breweries per capita.
Despite its strong performance, San Francisco did not claim the top spot nationally. That honor went to Miami, Florida, which ranked first overall. Miami was noted for its high number of affordable, highly-rated restaurants and a strong presence of farmers markets, gourmet food stores, butcher shops, and kitchen supply stores.
Portland, Oregon, secured the second position on the list. The city was praised for its abundant craft breweries and wineries, herb and spice shops, food and wine tours, and food festivals. Portland also offers a wide array of dining options, particularly eateries with high ratings. A notable advantage for Portland is its absence of sales tax on food purchases.
Several other California cities were also recognized among the top 20 foodie destinations in the United States. Sacramento ranked ninth, San Diego came in at twelfth, and Los Angeles was placed seventeenth, further highlighting California's diverse and vibrant culinary landscape.
