San Francisco Police Couple's Turbulent Marriage Preceded Murder-Suicide
A family friend revealed marital difficulties between former Deputy Chief Ann Mannix and her husband, Kevin Mannix, before the fatal incident.
San Francisco’s former deputy police chief, Ann Mannix, and her husband, Kevin Mannix, a retired sergeant, were involved in a turbulent marriage before he fatally shot her and their 24-year-old daughter, Katie, at their Marin County home, according to a close family friend.
The incident occurred Sunday evening at the couple's residence on Strawberry Circle. Authorities were alerted by a call reporting gunfire around 5:03 p.m. Responding officers arrived within minutes, secured the perimeter, and discovered the three deceased individuals inside.
The family friend, who had known Ann Mannix for over 60 years, told the California Post that Ann had confided in her about marital struggles. "We talked about her relationship with her husband," the friend said. "It wasn’t great." Despite these difficulties, the friend believed the couple was not estranged.
The friend expressed shock at the tragedy, stating, "I can’t imagine having that happen or doing that. So it caught me by surprise." She described Ann Mannix as a devoted mother who was looking forward to becoming a grandmother. "She was a wonderful mother. She had high hopes of being a grandmother soon," the friend recalled. "You know, she was a friend to everybody."
Ann and the friend met at age five and grew up as neighbors in San Francisco's Richmond District. Their friendship remained strong over the decades, with regular phone calls and a recent visit from Ann in the summer. The friend remembered Ann as intelligent, caring, strong, and athletic, with a good sense of humor. "She was super athletic. She always did everything better than me growing up. She was funny, you know. She was very civic-minded."
Katie Mannix, who also died in the incident, was studying to become a nurse and shared her mother's desire to help others. The friend described Katie as "fun, silly, the life of the party."
Ann Mannix had a distinguished career with the San Francisco Police Department, notably being the first woman to join and later lead its SWAT team. She advanced to deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau in 2018 and then took charge of the Special Operations Bureau in 2019.
Kevin Mannix retired from the SFPD in June 2018 after 27 years of service. In a farewell letter, he expressed gratitude for the relationships formed during his career and his intention to spend more time with family and friends, writing, "I leave the SFPD, but I am taking your friendships with me forever."
The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement mourning the loss, calling it a "tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide." The union acknowledged Ann as a trailblazer and Kevin's colleagues who served with him. "To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired," the statement read.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there is no known threat to the community. Detectives are continuing their investigation into the incident.
