San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie Offers Support to Giants Broadcaster Duane Kuiper After Cancer Diagnosis

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has publicly offered his support to longtime San Francisco Giants play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper after Kuiper announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer. Lurie conveyed his message through an X post on Sunday afternoon.

"San Francisco is with you, Kuip. Wishing you strength as you take on treatment. We’re all rooting for you," Lurie wrote in a post that directly responded to Kuiper's announcement.

Kuiper shared the news of his diagnosis, stating that he began treatment last week with doctors at Stanford Medicine. He clarified that this cancer is unrelated to a previous diagnosis five years ago and expressed optimism for a successful treatment. Kuiper announced that he will miss upcoming broadcasts as he undergoes treatment but anticipates returning soon. He also noted his eagerness to return for his broadcast partner Mike Krukow's final game before retirement.

Kuiper, a San Francisco icon, has been a part of the Giants' broadcast team since 1986, with a brief exception for one year working with the Colorado Rockies. He also played for the Giants for four seasons. His tenure has made him one of the most cherished figures within the organization and the Bay Area community.
