San Francisco Home Listed for Rent Weeks After Landlord Allegedly Murdered Tenant
A property in San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighborhood is available for $6,300 per month, despite a recent murder charge against the landlord.
A three-bedroom, two-bathroom house in San Francisco has been listed for rent at $6,300 per month, just months after the landlord was charged with allegedly murdering his tenant. The home is owned by the Chagniot 2007 Family Trust.
Prosecutors allege that landlord Phillipe Chagniot, 68, a retired dentist, shot his tenant, Eric Bigone, 58, in the back of the head with a silenced MAC-20 submachine gun on May 17. Bigone had reportedly rushed outside after discovering his car was on fire. According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Bigone's son, Dino Bigone, Chagniot then stood over the victim and shot him again before leaving the scene on his bicycle.
Chagniot was arrested on May 27 and faces charges including murder, lying in wait, discharging a firearm, assault with a machine gun, arson, and weapons offenses. He is being held without bail.
The rental listing describes the property as "a beautifully updated single-family home in San Francisco's desirable Outer Sunset neighborhood," highlighting features like hardwood floors, natural light, a large private backyard, and a private garage.
According to the lawsuit, Chagniot had become frustrated with Bigone, who had rented the home in 2023 for $3,200 a month. The suit claims Chagniot demanded cash payments to avoid reporting income and began a campaign of harassment in January 2026, issuing unlawful notices to enter the property. Chagniot allegedly informed Bigone that he intended to sell the home and repeatedly tried to intimidate him into vacating.
The lawsuit further alleges that Chagniot refused to accept Bigone's rent payments and insisted he leave by March 1. Bigone reportedly hired an attorney to resolve the rent issue. The filing states that after his attempts to force Bigone out failed, Chagniot and his wife allegedly conspired to murder Bigone to facilitate the sale of the property. The suit claims Chagniot spray-painted cameras in the vicinity before the alleged killing.
After Bigone's death, his son received condolences from Chagniot's wife, Barbara Chagniot, and a text from Phillipe Chagniot. The son was unaware of Chagniot's alleged involvement at the time and subsequently asked for his father's security deposit back. The landlord reportedly insisted no deposit existed and urged the family to leave the premises quickly.
The real estate broker for the listed home, Renee Engelen, stated that disclosure of crimes on a property is legally required within two years, but claimed the fatal shooting occurred on the sidewalk, not on the property itself. Engelen told The San Francisco Standard that the lease agreement does disclose the alleged killing but declined to provide a copy, citing privileged information.
One prospective renter who toured the property noted suspicion due to the home being owned by a family trust. After researching online, the individual discovered news of the killing. The potential tenant expressed unease about the situation and the prospect of their rent money benefiting the suspect's family.
