San Francisco Fire Department Shakeup Follows Discovery of Mocking Poster

A San Francisco fire station has undergone significant leadership changes following the discovery of a poster that mocked several female firefighters and one male colleague who were on leave.

The poster, found last month at Fire Station No. 8 in the city’s South Beach neighborhood, featured the heading "Stress…it’s an epidemic!" and a reference to a "California State Hospital for the Criminally Insane." It also included photos of individuals with their faces obscured and derogatory comments, according to reports.

One firefighter was specifically targeted for having an allergy to turnout gear, the protective clothing worn by firefighters. The origins of the poster remain under investigation.

In response to the incident, fire officials reassigned four lieutenants, two captains, and three battalion chiefs from Station No. 8. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen has stated that he deemed the poster "inappropriate and derogatory." He issued a department-wide memo emphasizing the importance of a respectful and professional work environment.

"Upholding a respectful and professional environment is essential to the safety, trust, and integrity of our department," Crispen wrote in the memo. The department has publicly committed to taking corrective actions when "potentially inappropriate material" is discovered, affirming its dedication to a "safe and healthy work environment where every individual is treated with civility, dignity, and respect."
