Grind & Unwind, a family-owned cafe that opened on San Francisco's Haight Street in May, faced significant backlash and subsequent vandalism after using AI-generated images to depict its food and drinks on its menu.

The Lozano family, owners of Grind & Unwind, initially displayed the AI-generated images as a temporary measure while managing the demands of a new business and raising young children. However, the visuals quickly drew criticism online, with some users deeming them "AI slop" and accusing the cafe of misleading customers.

Social media platforms, including Reddit and Yelp, became hubs for this criticism. Reddit users mocked the unrealistic appearance of the AI food images, with one commenter stating a preference for low-quality real photographs over the computer-generated ones. On Yelp, reviewers expressed concern that the AI imagery did not accurately represent the actual food, with one reviewer calling it "false advertising."

The online controversy escalated into real-world damage when the cafe's awning was spray-painted with red graffiti on July 2. Lyndsey Lozano, one of the owners, discovered the vandalism and believes the graffiti read "seriously." The repair bill for the damage is expected to exceed $700.

In response to the backlash and vandalism, the cafe removed the AI-generated posters on July 6. They have since replaced them with displays of their actual pastries in the front window. The owners also plan to expand their menu with items like smashburgers and hope to host community events to foster local engagement.

"Honestly, we just kinda wanna move forward and forget about the sign and hope people come try our quality food and really make it a cool spot that locals can gather," Lozano told SFGate. The cafe aims to focus on its quality food and become a gathering place for the community.
