San Francisco 49ers Reporter Slams Colleague for Being Too Close to Players
Grant Cohn criticized David Lombardi's professional conduct in a live stream rant.
San Francisco 49ers reporter Grant Cohn has publicly criticized his colleague, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard, accusing him of unprofessional behavior and an overly familiar relationship with the team's players. The critique came during a live stream rant on Thursday night, where Cohn detailed his grievances with Lombardi's reporting style.
"I can’t stand David Lombardi. Here’s why: Dude, it’s bad enough that he’s a fan of the team that he covers. But he thinks he’s on the team!" Cohn stated. He further elaborated that Lombardi allegedly avoids asking critical questions at postgame press conferences, opting instead to engage in what Cohn described as "hugging the players" and congratulating them as if he were part of the team.
Cohn expressed his belief that this level of familiarity crosses professional boundaries. "It’s not your job to bro-out with the players! There’s supposed to be professional distance," he argued. Cohn accused Lombardi of taking his reporting to an excessive level, suggesting it went beyond typical journalistic practice.
Cohn himself has previously drawn attention for his own reporting style, including viral food reviews and stream-of-consciousness commentary during the 49ers' trip to Australia to start the NFL season. His direct and sometimes confrontational approach has reportedly not always been well-received by 49ers players.
As of the report, Lombardi had not yet responded to Cohn's criticisms.
