San Francisco 49ers majority owner Jed York was arrested in Ohio on charges related to a prostitution sting operation. York was taken into custody by East Palestine police after responding to an advertisement on what police described as a known prostitution website.
According to police reports, York allegedly arranged to meet an individual for sexual activity in exchange for $140. The intended meeting location was near the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine. York was intercepted by officers from the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as he approached the area.
He was also charged with possessing criminal tools, as the cell phone used to arrange the encounter was found in his possession. In a plea deal, York pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. His legal team's motion to seal the court records was denied.
The NFL has stated that the league will review the matter under its Personal Conduct Policy, which applies to owners, coaches, and other team personnel and prohibits conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the NFL. The policy indicates that a criminal conviction or disposition can lead to discipline, as can conduct deemed unacceptable by the league, even without a criminal conviction.
The 49ers organization has declined to comment on the arrest, stating the episode is closed. However, the incident draws attention to recent legal issues involving members of the team's leadership. Earlier in the year, head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a head-on collision in Palo Alto, California, after admitting to being distracted by his phone. Separately, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk faced an arrest warrant for exhibition of speed after posting a video of himself driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph in a 40-mph zone.
