San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria is facing scrutiny over the city's fiscal management, highlighted by recent issues with trash fee billing and significant budget deficits. Thousands of San Diego homeowners were recently overcharged for trash removal services, with some facing bills as high as $1,000. These erroneous charges were in some instances included on property tax bills rather than separate sanitation statements.

The trash fee debacle is emblematic of broader financial difficulties plaguing San Diego, which this year faced an $118 million deficit attributed to escalating expenses. The city's spending priorities have drawn criticism, including a notable expenditure of 5% of its general fund on renovations for city offices, which involved upgrades like new furniture and cubicles.

His tenure followed that of Republican Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who navigated the city through crises such as homelessness, migrant surges, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to Faulconer, Democrat Bob Filner's term ended prematurely due to a sex scandal.
