San Diego Ranks Among Nation's Top College Towns, But California Cities Dominate Worst Rankings

San Diego has secured a spot among the nation's top 10 best college towns, according to a new ranking by WalletHub. The city, home to institutions like UC San Diego and San Diego State University, placed seventh overall. However, the same report highlights a stark contrast, with many other California cities occupying the bottom of the list, largely due to high living costs.

WalletHub's study evaluated over 400 U.S. cities based on 31 indicators across academic, social, and economic opportunities for students. These factors included the cost of living, crime rates, and the quality of higher education.

While San Diego earned its place in the top tier, California cities disproportionately filled the lower ranks. Compton was identified as the worst college town in the U.S., with East Los Angeles, Carson, and Norwalk also falling within the bottom five. This trend underscores a significant affordability challenge for students in many parts of the state.

In terms of cost of living for students, five California cities — Santa Clara, San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Santa Monica, and Stanford — were among the top five highest. Stanford also ranked second in the cost of education category.

"Picking the right college is crucial, but it’s also important to make sure that the surrounding college town will be a place where you’ll truly love spending your college years," said Chris Lupo, an analyst at WalletHub. "Towns with a low cost of living, plenty of activities and large student populations can make your college experience a lot less stressful and a lot more enjoyable. In addition, cities with a great economic environment can make it easier to get a job during or immediately after college."

The study utilized data from various federal agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Center for Education Statistics. Despite the cost of living concerns, some California cities like Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz have previously been recognized for their scenic beauty, with Santa Barbara ranking fourth and Santa Cruz seventh on a list of the most beautiful college towns by HouseBeautiful.
