San Diego Police Dog Burned, Three Officers Injured in Standoff

A police K-9 named Ryder was burned and three officers sustained injuries during a standoff in San Diego's North Park neighborhood Wednesday morning. The incident concluded with an officer-involved shooting after the suspect allegedly attempted to set fire to the dog and an adult bookstore.

San Diego police responded to reports of a suspect attempting to break into vehicles. The suspect fled on foot when officers encountered him, eventually entering a nearby adult bookstore. Authorities stated the suspect possessed flammable liquid and created a significant flame. K-9 Ryder and officers entered the store, where the suspect reportedly used the flame against the police dog.

Three officers also sustained burns, the details of which were not immediately specified. Witnesses reported hearing multiple loud noises, described as bangs, during the confrontation. Video captured the K-9 being removed from the building and placed into a police vehicle.

Investigators stated the suspect then allegedly set himself on fire while advancing towards officers, attempting to ignite the building. An officer discharged their firearm multiple times, striking the suspect. Witnesses described a distressing scene as the suspect was removed from the store engulfed in flames.

The suspect was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. K-9 Ryder received treatment for burns to his face and has since been released, with authorities expecting a full recovery. The injured officers were also treated for their burns.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting.
