San Diego Airport Soars to Global Growth Crown Amid Airline Competition

San Diego International Airport (SAN) has been named the fastest-growing major airport globally in 2026, outpacing other major international airports as a competitive landscape among airlines significantly increases flight activity. According to an analysis by Simple Flying, SAN saw a 13% increase in passenger flights compared to 2025, a rate higher than those recorded by Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport and Zurich Airport, which both experienced 12% growth.

This substantial growth for a single-runway airport that handles millions of passengers annually is largely attributed to a competitive dynamic between Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Both carriers are vying for dominance at the San Diego hub, a key West Coast location for both.

Southwest Airlines has expanded its operations at SAN by adding 10 new destinations, intensifying its presence in California. Alaska Airlines has responded by introducing six new routes and increasing its flight departures by nearly 40% year-over-year. This increased activity by the two major carriers has led to competition for limited airport resources, reportedly squeezing out smaller airlines.

Frontier Airlines, for instance, has reduced its San Diego schedule by 20% as available capacity has tightened and costs have risen. Major carriers such as Delta, American, and United have maintained their existing schedules at the airport.

The airport's growth surge follows a record-breaking year in 2025, during which San Diego International Airport welcomed 25.32 million passengers, marking its busiest year in history. This represented a 0.3% increase from 2024, with international passenger traffic showing a notable rise of 8%, according to airport officials.

Further contributing to the airport's modernization and capacity, a new Terminal 1 was opened in September 2025. This multibillion-dollar project replaced the previous terminal and introduced 19 new gates. In its initial three months of operation, the new terminal saw passenger traffic increase by over 11% compared to the same period in the preceding year. The airport's central location in the city prevents physical expansion of its runways, making the current growth particularly significant.
