Samuel Monroe Jr., Actor in 'Menace II Society,' Dies at 52

Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., known for his role in the 1993 film "Menace II Society," died on August 26 at the age of 52. His official cause of death has been determined to be coccidioidal meningitis infection and respiratory failure, with sepsis pneumonia also listed as contributing factors.

Monroe had been hospitalized and on life support since April due to multiple health issues stemming from contracting meningitis approximately 18 months prior to his death. According to reports, his condition was initially misdiagnosed, allowing the meningitis to spread to his spine and brain over eight months.

During his hospitalization, Monroe developed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia and was placed on dialysis for kidney failure. His spouse, Shawna Stewart, confirmed that doctors had begun a new antibiotic regimen to combat the MRSA infection.

MRSA pneumonia can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body's response to infection damages its own tissues, potentially causing septic shock and organ failure if not treated promptly.

Monroe, who was married and had three children, was buried in Los Angeles. His mother, Joyce Patton, announced his death on Facebook, thanking friends and family for their prayers and asking them to pray for his children. A GoFundMe page was also established to help his family with medical expenses. The page indicated Monroe had undergone two brain surgeries.

Beyond "Menace II Society," where he played Ilena's cousin, Monroe's acting credits include "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood," "Set It Off," "Out All Night," and "NYPD Blue." He also worked as a director, writer, and producer, developing a TV series titled "The Halls." Monroe also pursued a rap career, with songs produced by artists such as Battlecat and Duane Nettlesbey. His last known roles were as Zero in the 2022 television film "Shine Kings" and The Intruder in the 2021 film "Lockdown 2025."
