Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, a former high-ranking member of the Gambino crime family, has detailed the precise moment he decided to cooperate with federal authorities against mob boss John Gotti. Gravano shared his account on the "Hang Out With Sean Hannity" podcast, explaining that Gotti's legal team's plan to cast him as the sole villain and later discovering Gotti's alleged intent to have him eliminated were the primary catalysts for his defection.

Gravano recounted a pivotal conversation where he learned how Gotti's defense intended to present Gotti to a jury. "They're going to turn around, including your lawyer, and say to the jurors, 'You heard the tapes. Sammy's a monster. Killed all these people, took over the businesses and everything. Poor John Gotti. You hear him complaining on the tape. It's not him. It's him,'" Gravano explained.

He perceived this strategy as a classic Mafia tactic, where "the boss must go free," even if it meant sacrificing a subordinate. This realization, coupled with Gotti's own recorded discussions of mob activities, including the hit on former boss Paul Castellano, initially frustrated Gravano. However, it was the perceived betrayal by Gotti's defense that solidified his decision.

"At first, I was annoyed in a way, like, man, you don't know when to shut your f---ing mouth," Gravano said about Gotti's loose talk on tapes. "But it went beyond that."

After hearing the defense's strategy, Gravano recalled walking away and making the resolution to cooperate. "I said, 'Okay.' And I walked away," he stated. "Well, as I walked away, I said, 'F--- the Mafia, f--- the oath and f--- John Gotti — I'm switching sides. He wants to play chess with me. Let's play chess.'"

Gravano also revealed that he learned at a much later date that Gotti allegedly planned to have him killed. "I find this out way later, so it's not the reason I cooperated – but I find out later he's going to take me out," Gravano said. He learned that Gotti purportedly intended to have an associate, Frankie LoCascio, spread word that Gravano had "lost his mind" and was acting erratically, a pretext for his elimination.

Gravano's extensive interview touched upon his decades within the Mafia, including taking the blood oath, participating in numerous murders, and orchestrating the assassination of Paul Castellano. The full interview is available on various podcast platforms.
