Samantha Armytage and Tom Steinfort are reportedly on the cusp of permanent hosting roles for Channel Nine's "Today" show, following a substantial boost in the program's ratings during their recent stint. The duo's temporary engagement appears to have resonated with viewers, leading to an increase of approximately 60,000 viewers.

Channel Nine has been actively seeking permanent hosts for "Today" since Karl Stefanovic's departure in June. The network has also seen Sarah Abo take maternity leave last month, further necessitating a stable on-air team. The Australian reports that the ten percent ratings increase observed during Steinfort and Armytage's time has caught the attention of network executives.

While Armytage is currently in Thailand and is expected to resume hosting duties on August 24, Sylvia Jeffreys, co-host of "Today Extra," is filling in alongside Steinfort. The "Today" show's ratings saw a notable jump on Wednesday, attracting 756,000 national viewers, an increase from the 696,000 viewers who tuned in the previous Wednesday when Michael Willesee Jr. co-hosted with Armytage. Thursday's broadcast continued this positive trend, drawing 722,000 viewers, up from 686,000 the week prior.

An industry insider cited by The Daily Telegraph praised Steinfort's performance, describing the week as "a much more comfortable watch" and highlighting his strong work ethic. Steinfort, 41, is a well-regarded figure within Channel Nine, with prior experience as "Today's" newsreader during the 2019 era and as a reporter for "60 Minutes." He has also co-hosted "Weekend Today," making his return to breakfast television a familiar undertaking.

Viewers have also expressed positive feedback on social media regarding Steinfort's presence, noting his charisma and chemistry with the team. Many have suggested his permanent inclusion on the show, with some specifically calling for him to replace Karl Stefanovic. Comments also indicated approval of the on-screen chemistry between Armytage and Steinfort.

Channel Nine has been trialling hosts for the show since Karl Stefanovic left in June, following the fallout from his controversial interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson on his podcast. Sarah Abo went on maternity leave last month

Despite the recent gains, "Today" still faces a significant challenge in closing the gap with its rival, Channel Seven's "Sunrise."
