Sam Taylor-Johnson on Age Gap with Aaron: 'He's Been Working for 30 Years'
The director discusses her relationship with her husband, emphasizing his long career and grounded perspective.
Sam Taylor-Johnson, 59, has shared her perspective on the 23-year age difference between herself and her husband, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 36. She stated in an interview with The Sunday Times magazine that she doesn't feel the age gap because of Aaron's extensive career experience.
"He's been doing his job for 30 years," Sam explained, noting that Aaron made his stage debut at age six and left school at 15 to pursue acting. She added that his experience has given him a "uniquely wise perspective" and keeps her "grounded," describing his energy as a good balance to her own.
The couple met in 2008 on the set of the film Nowhere Boy. At the time, Aaron was 18 and Sam was 42. Their romantic relationship did not begin until after filming concluded.
Sam, a filmmaker, reflected on the intense public fascination with their relationship when they first got together. She suggested that people were intrigued by a relationship that did not fit conventional expectations. "I guess people want to understand things when they can't," she said. "They want to pick up art when they can't fathom what a certain love story that doesn't fit in a box is."
She also addressed whether the age difference impacts their shared interests or reference points, stating that it never does. "After 14 years you just think, surely by now it doesn't really matter?" she commented.
Sam described her approach to relationships as instinctual and going "feet first into everything." She believes that "the heart overrides everything. Love conquers all."
The couple became engaged a year after meeting and married in 2012. They have two daughters together, Wylda, 16, and Romy, 14. Sam also has two older daughters from her previous marriage to Jay Jopling: Angelica, 29, and Jessie, 19.
