Sam Neill, the renowned actor known for his roles in "Jurassic Park" and "The Piano," found immense pride in his family life, which encompassed four children and eight grandchildren. Despite the demands of his global acting career, Neill was a devoted father and grandfather, often sharing anecdotes about his family in his memoir, "Did I Ever Tell You This?"

His eldest son, Andrew Neill, was given up for adoption in 1969 when Sam was in his early twenties. The father and son later reunited after 25 years, a reunion Neill described as a grown-up, rather than overtly emotional, experience. He reflected that he wished he could tell his younger self that he was more capable than he believed.

Neill had three other children. Tim Neill-Harrow was born in 1983 during his relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow. Tim pursued a career behind the scenes in film production, working on projects such as "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Guardians of the Galaxy." He is the father to a son, Lachlan, and twin daughters, Molly and Poppy.

Elena Neill, Sam's only biological daughter with makeup artist Noriko Watanabe, briefly followed in her father's acting footsteps. She appeared in the Australian television film "The Brush-Off" (2004) and Jane Campion's mystery drama "Top of the Lake" (2013), where she played a tattoo artist. Elena eventually pursued tattoo artistry herself and is based in Melbourne. She has a daughter whose name has not been publicly disclosed.

Maiko Spencer, the daughter of Noriko Watanabe from a previous relationship, was adopted by Neill during his marriage to Watanabe. Maiko generally maintained a private life but welcomed her first child, Nahlo, in 2021. Neill shared the news of his grandson's birth, noting the profound love he felt.

Neill candidly spoke about the challenges of balancing his career with fatherhood, acknowledging that his job often involved extensive travel, leading to his absence. Despite these difficulties, his son Tim defended his father's parenting, calling him a loving father and grandfather.

In 2022, after being diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer, Neill began writing his memoir, "Did I Ever Tell You This?" He viewed the book not just as a bestseller for fans, but as a personal record of his life, memories, and stories for his children and grandchildren to cherish.

Sam Neill died on July 13 in Sydney after a battle with pneumonia. His family stated that his passing was sudden and unexpected but that he remained cancer-free. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.
